The world can be a scary place, and we’re reminded of that every single day in many different ways. Unsolved mysteries are one of the most unnerving things ever because—what do you mean someone can just up and disappear, never to be seen again? What do you mean crimes go unsolved? Well, what better time to dive into stories like this than October? Here are 10 of the craziest unsolved mysteries that will make your mind spin:

One of the most baffling aviation mysteries in history, Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 disappeared on March 8, 2014, while en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. The Boeing 777, carrying 239 passengers and crew, suddenly disappeared from the radar, and despite years of searching, only small pieces of debris have been found. The wreckage has never been located, and no one knows exactly what caused the plane to go off course and disappear into the Indian Ocean. The mystery remains unsolved to this day and while there are many theories, there are no clear answers for families and loved ones.

The Dyatlov Pass Incident

This 1959 mystery from the Ural Mountains in Russia is the stuff of nightmares. Nine experienced hikers set out on a trek but never made it back. When their bodies were found scattered in the snow, investigators were left with more questions than answers. Their tent had been cut open from the inside, and some of the hikers were barefoot in the freezing cold, suggesting they fled in panic. Injuries ranged from broken bones to missing eyes, but no one knows what caused the chaos. Was it an avalanche, a military test, or something more bizarre?

The Disappearance of Frederick Valentich

One of the most unsettling unsolved mysteries involving UFOs is the disappearance of Frederick Valentich, a 20-year-old pilot who vanished while flying over the Bass Strait off the coast of Australia in October 1978. During his flight, Valentich radioed air traffic control to report that a strange aircraft was following him. He described it as long, metallic, and glowing with green lights. As the conversation continued, Valentich’s voice became more frantic, saying that the unidentified craft was hovering above him and that his engine was malfunctioning. Then, suddenly, the transmission cut out, and Valentich was never heard from again. His plane was never found, and search efforts didn’t find any wreckage. Some believe he was abducted by aliens, while others suggest he became disoriented or experienced mechanical failure. Whatever it may be, this is one of the eeriest unsolved mysteries out there.

On Christmas Eve in 1945, a fire broke out at the Sodder family’s home in West Virginia. Five of the nine Sodder children vanished in the flames—or did they? Despite an extensive search, no remains were ever found in the ashes, leading the family to believe the children had been kidnapped. Over the years, strange clues, like sightings of the children and cryptic notes, fueled the mystery. Did the children die in the fire, or were they taken? The case remains unsolved to this day.

The Hinterkaifeck Murders

In 1922, the Gruber family and their maid were brutally murdered on their isolated farm in Hinterkaifeck, Germany. Disturbingly, it seemed that the killer stayed at the farm for several days after the murders, feeding the animals and making meals. The investigation revealed strange events leading up to the murders, like footprints in the snow leading to the house but none leaving, and reports of strange noises in the attic. Despite a long investigation, the Hinterkaifeck Murders remain unsolved, and it’s one of Germany’s oldest cold cases.

The Black Dahlia Murder

In 1947, 22-year-old Elizabeth Short, better known as the Black Dahlia, was found in Los Angeles in one of the most notorious murder cases in American history. The case drew massive media attention due to its shocking nature, and despite hundreds of suspects, no one was ever convicted. To this day, theories range from secret Hollywood connections to unknown serial killers, but the true identity of the Black Dahlia’s murderer remains a mystery.

The Ghost Ship Mary Celeste

In 1872, the Mary Celeste was found adrift in the Atlantic Ocean with its sails still set and everything on board intact—except for the crew, who were nowhere to be found. The lifeboat was missing, but there were no signs of foul play, no distress signals, and enough supplies to last the crew six months. The ship’s last log entry was written 10 days before it was discovered. What happened to the crew of the Mary Celeste? No one knows, and theories range from piracy to supernatural forces.

The Disappearance of Brandon Swanson

In 2008, 19-year-old Brandon Swanson was driving home from a party when he accidentally drove into a ditch. He called his parents for help, but during the call, he suddenly shouted "Oh, sh*t!" before the line went dead. His car was found, but there was no trace of Brandon, despite extensive searches. Theories include everything from foul play to an accident, but no solid answers have ever been found. What happened to Brandon that night is a mystery to this day.

The Flannan Isles Lighthouse Mystery

In 1900, three lighthouse keepers disappeared from the Flannan Isles Lighthouse off the coast of Scotland. When a relief crew arrived, they found the lighthouse in working order, but the keepers were all gone. The only clue they were there in the first place was a log entry mentioning a severe storm—except there was no record of any storm in the area at the time. Theories include everything from a rogue wave to alien abduction, but no one knows what really happened to the men.

The Yuba County Five

In 1978, five friends from Yuba County, California, disappeared after a basketball game. Their car was found abandoned on a remote mountain road, with no sign of the men. Months later, four of their bodies were discovered in the woods, miles from where the car was found. One body was never recovered. Why did they abandon the car? What happened to them out there? The case remains unsolved, and the mystery has puzzled investigators for decades.

There you have it—10 unsolved mysteries that will make you question reality a little and possibly keep you up at night. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr’s legacy in the Civil Rights space is an ever-present inspiration to all oppressed and marginalized people. MLK played a massively pivotal role in inspiring the Black community, but through his speeches, fights, and political views, he also effectively highlighted that the spirit of mutuality is where we needed to collectively focus. As MLK noted in his "Letter from Birmingham Jail," written on April 16, 1963:

“We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”

It’s in this spirit that he was able to influence Latino leaders and communities to join in the fight for civil rights and collective liberation.

The Eaton, Palisades, and other fires have left Los Angeles County in a state of crisis, with widespread destruction and significant loss of life. Amidst the chaos, immigrant workers and the Latino community at large rallied to support the community and help save LA. At the same time, challenges for immigrants who are undocumented, immigrants who are documented, and anyone who fits the stereotype of what an “immigrant” looks like, continue to mount, as the Laken Riley Act makes its way through Congress, which threatens to undermine not just immigrant rights, but everyone’s rights.
