In The Community
At Luz we’re obsessed with everything and anything media-related. If you’re looking for a place to chat comic books, cos-play, and the comic book universe (and the multiverse too, perhaps?) then check out our newly added Luz Discord Comic Channel.
And don’t worry, it’s a safe space for Luz Members only so don’t forget to sign up for your free account to get the Discord invite if you’re not already a Member.
In the Luz Comic Channel we’ll be talking everything Latina in comics to dissecting America Chavez in the new Doctor Strange movie and more. Latinas and Latinos don’t have nearly enough presence in the comic universes, but that’s starting to change. That’s happening because the fandom keeps demanding it! Bad Bunny as El Muerto didn’t happen on its own, after all.
And yes, we know people have thoughts about Puerto Rican Bad Bunny being cast as Mexican El Muerto, so that’s what the Luz Discord Comic Channel is for - to discuss! Respectfully, of course. Our comunidad is your comunidad after all, we’ll see you there!
If you liked this content, make sure to join the Luz Media Discord Open Houses, which take place every second Tuesday of the month at 7pm EST.
A little over a month ago, we were sharing the exciting news that America Chavez, the first queer Latina in the MCU, had finally debuted on the big screen. And now we get even more diversity in the MCU good news: Ms. Marvel, the first Muslim MCU character, is coming to our screens on June 8th.
Meet Kamala Khan, a Muslim American teenager, with an oversized imagination, who feels invisible both at home and at school. One of the main heroes she fangirls over is Captain Marvel, who she sees as an idol. Newfound superpowers turn her life upside down, as she becomes just like the superheroes she’s always looked up to.
But of course, things aren’t always that easy, and trouble is soon to find her in the form of villains and just regular old human life struggles.

The character will be brought to life by 19-year-old Iman Vellani who was announced to be playing the role back in 2020. She was born in Karachi, Pakistan, but she and her parents moved to Canada when she was barely a year old.
What’s even more cool is that this is her acting debut. Vellani was fresh out of highscool and planning to attend Ontario College of Art & Design University, but she obviously has a few more important priorities to attend to now, having already been announced as part of the cast in the future Marvel film “The Marvels.” Fans of the character were thrilled as she not only looks the part but also represents everything Ms. Marvel stands for.
The series premiers on Disney+ on June 8th, and you’ll be able to catch a brand new episode each week. This series is sure to be an exciting journey. Check out the full trailer:
