Director: Ari Aster

Starting off strong with a modern horror masterpiece, "Hereditary" is unsettling from start to finish. The story follows the Graham family, who seem cursed by something sinister that takes over their lives after the death of their secretive grandmother. It’s a slow burn, so expect a lot of psychological tension and disturbing images that will stay with you long after the credits roll. Trust us, this one is not for the faint of heart and you'll probably only want to watch it once.

If you’re into family drama with a seriously dark twist, "Hereditary" delivers and the phone pole scene is one of the most intense in horror. If you know, you know!

Director: Robert Eggers

Set in 1630s New England, "The Witch" tells the story of a Puritan family who encounters supernatural forces after they’re cast out from their village. This slow-building, eerie tale is filled with religious paranoia and isolation, culminating in a chilling climax. The bleak visuals and haunting soundtrack will pull you right into its dark, twisted world.

It’s like watching a folktale come to life. The atmosphere alone is worth the watch, and it might just make you rethink that autumn trip to the woods.

Jordan Peele’s "Get Out" isn’t just scary; it’s socially insightful and loaded with symbolism. The film follows Chris, a Black man who visits his white girlfriend’s family estate for the weekend, only to find that something is seriously off about them. It combines suspense, psychological horror, and social commentary, in a way that will keep you guessing—and thinking—long after it’s over.

This movie is smart and terrifyingly relevant. Plus, Peele’s unique style of horror brings something fresh to the genre.

Halloween wouldn’t be complete without a classic, and "A Nightmare on Elm Street" is a must for anyone who loves old-school horror. This slasher movie introduces Freddy Krueger, a burned, razor-gloved man who haunts teenagers in their dreams. And yes, if he gets you in your sleep, it’s game over in real life. Wes Craven’s creation turned nightmares into the ultimate scare tactic, and Freddy quickly became one of horror’s most iconic villains.

This is a nostalgic ride into 80s horror and proof that sometimes the scariest things happen when you close your eyes.

If you’re a fan of psychological horror, "The Babadook" is a creepy, emotional journey worth every minute. The story revolves around a single mother and her troubled son, who become haunted by a sinister figure from a children’s book. With terrifying visuals and a powerful storyline about grief and mental health, The Babadook goes beyond traditional scares.

This one isn't just scary; it’s an emotional rollercoaster that makes you question what’s real and what’s imagined.

For zombie fans, "Train to Busan" is the perfect mix of action, suspense, and heart. This South Korean horror film takes place on a high-speed train during a zombie outbreak, and it’s a nonstop thrill ride from start to finish. It’s more than just jump scares, though; the movie dives deep into human nature, survival, and the idea of sacrificing for the ones you love.

It's intense, fast-paced, and genuinely moving. Plus, who doesn’t want to see a horror movie set on a train?

The Exorcist (1973)

No Halloween list would be complete without "The Exorcist," the classic that has terrified audiences for decades. Based on a real-life exorcism, the film tells the story of a young girl possessed by a demon, and the two priests who try to save her. With its haunting visuals, disturbing scenes, and one of the best horror soundtracks of all time, "The Exorcist" is a timeless scare that still holds up today.

Needless to say, this is a horror classic that stands the test of time and it set the standard for possession movies.

Midsommar (2019)

Director: Ari Aster

If you haven't watched "Midsommar" yet, you're missing out on a chilling experience. Unlike most horror films, this one takes place almost entirely in broad daylight, in a remote Swedish village where a seemingly friendly midsummer festival takes a sinister turn. As a group of friends becomes more entangled in the village’s disturbing rituals, they realize they’re in way over their heads.

"Midsommar" proves you don’t need darkness to create a terrifying atmosphere. Its unique setting and psychological horror will have you on edge the entire time.

So, there you have it—8 horror movies that are perfect for a Halloween marathon. Whether you’re watching solo curled up with a blanket or with friends and family, these movies will set the perfect spooky vibe.

Thanksgiving is such a weird holiday.

As far as my knowledge goes, not a lot of people in Latin America celebrate it but many are aware of this U.S. holiday. As a native Salvadoran, growing up I remember that I thought it was weird to have a holiday that’s a day to just be thankful. We perceived it differently. Later I realized what Thanksgiving actually commemorated: a day to celebrate, but to celebrate how European colonizers had taken advantage of Native Americans.

As an ecosystem of Black and diverse-owned media owners, the Black Owned Media Equity and Sustainability Institute (BOMESI) stands united in our support and admiration for Vice President Kamala Harris, who ran an inspiring and powerful campaign. Harris’s journey to the ballot was one of resilience, strength, and dedication, and her message resonated with many. However, her campaign efforts were undermined not necessarily by any lack on her part, but by the choices made by Democratic operatives who failed to recognize and invest in the unique value of Black and diverse-owned media in reaching diverse voters.
